We've had a deal of snow in the past couple of days. The birch forests of Sognsvann, just north of my apartment, is a mecca for the Oslo cross-country skiers (and there is a good deal of them!!). Oslo has a really great feel in the winter - there are people in their ski gear on the metro all the time, the Christmas markets are up and running, and there are lights everywhere.

On most weekdays, I spend my days in libraries writing and researching my thesis.

This is the Deichmanske Bibliotek - Oslo public library.

This is the view from the library of Norges Handelhøyskole. It is in a new building in the neighbourhood of Nydalen. It is a maze of pedways, stairs, and escalators that go up four floors at a time.

Hardangerfjorden

Yesterday, we rented a car and drove into the Hardangerfjord, south of Bergen. We drove down to Hatvik, where we took a ferry to Venjaneset. From there we drove to Norheimsund via Eikelandsosen/Mundheim. We worked our way up the fjord through Øystese and Kvanndal to finally arrive in Granvin, where you'll see the picture of a white church, which has a bell cast in 1050, one of the oldest of the Nordic countries. From there, we drove up to Voss (famous for its skiing and designer water), and beack to Bergen via Dale (famous for Dale of Norway woolen products).

We went through innumerable tunnels, going under mountains to different valleys, all of which were completely different weather from the one before. The road often was only wide enough for one car, hardly ever with any markings. Lots of switchbacks and hairpin corners, but the views were amazing. Hardangerfjord is famous in Norway for its orchards, so I might go back in the spring to see them all in bloom.

Gamlehaugen is the official residence of the King of Norway (Harald V) when he is in Bergen. It is about a 20 minute walk from my apartment, and since today was unusually pleasant, I took the liberty and going down and taking some snapshots. It lies right on the fjord, surrounded by various islands. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get able pictures of that because the sun was just too bright! Not that I'm complaining...

Sognefjord

On Sunday, we took a fjord tour down the Sognefjord, just north of Bergen. It is the World's longest and deepest fjord. The sights were absolutely amazing! From there we took the train from Flåm to Myrdal, and then Myrdal back to Bergen (see the previous post for some pictures of that journey). The whole adventure took about 10 hours, but it was definitely worth it!! In parts, it reminded me of both the Rockies (only on an ocean) and of remote Iceland (only with more trees).

Hello Everyone!

I took some more random pictures of Bergen today - the first picture is of a typical downtown Bergen shopping mall (there are 4 or so like this one). The last picture may not be that exciting, but it is my department building where most of my classes are held.

I promise I'll start going more places soon so my pictures will be a bit more diverse!!

Bergen is surround by "De Syv Fjellene" - The Seven Mountains. Today, Laura and I climbed the highest of them, Ulriken. The weather was for the most part miserable (making the paths muddy, wet and slippery), but it was a great hike! The vegetation was very lush but none at the top (at which point we were in a cloud). Here are some pictures..
